Compare two- and four-year nursing clinical program requirements. Learn the key differences between ADN and BSN program requirements for clinical students.
ADN and BSN programs do have different clinical requirements. Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs offer quicker entry to healthcare, but Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs are typically considered more thorough and are increasingly in demand. Clinical hour ranges can vary greatly, too, with BSN degrees requiring an average of 500 hours or more above what ADN degrees require. Keep reading for a breakdown of the differences in background screening standards, documentation requirements, and program accreditation standards.
Criminal history screening, immunization requirements, and drug test standards are similar across program types.
Renewal timelines vary between documents and institutional policy.
Four-year programs offer broader training and require more clinical experience than two-year programs.
Background screening standards do not typically differ between ADN and BSN programs because of the guidelines set by nursing accreditation bodies. A state’s Board of Nursing mandates criminal history screening for all nurses it licenses, regardless of degree level. University systems and healthcare facilities often include additional prerequisites like the National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) or sanctions list checks to maintain compliance and create a safe environment for patients.
Immunization requirements are generally similar across program types. State health departments, medical institutions, and nursing schools frequently base immunization policy on CDC guidance for students and healthcare personnel. Common immunizations include Hepatitis B, influenza, MMR, Tdap, and Varicella. While not a vaccine itself, TB screening is routinely associated with these policies due to its infectious nature.
Drug testing policies do not generally differ between ADN and BSN students. Similar to immunization requirements, drug testing policies exist at each governing tier and cover all nursing and healthcare employees regardless of student status. Failing a drug test may result in removal from a school’s nursing program, exclusion from placement at partner facilities, and state Board sanctions.
Accreditation standards aren’t the same for ADN and BSN programs because of the difference in regulating bodies. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) oversees all levels of nursing education programs, but largely focuses on entry-level programs providing foundational clinical skills. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) regulates baccalaureate, graduate, and residency/fellowship programs. Both curricula prepare students for the NCLEX-RN exam, but the latter includes more comprehensive training and additional clinical experience versus its counterpart.
