Discover what makes Pennsylvania’s student clinical compliance requirements unique. Dive into nursing student placement necessities in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania healthcare facilities require students to complete compliance requirements that support patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance. Most clinical placements require health screenings, immunization records, criminal background checks, and more to maintain funding for healthcare programs. We cover those requirements and more in the article below.
Clinical students in Pennsylvania need to pass several clearances and remain up to date on immunization and criminal history records and training certificates.
Nursing students are encouraged to begin the compliance process early to circumvent delays. Transferring students can sometimes reuse documents to speed up the process.
Criminal history rescreening and document renewal timelines are heavily dependent on healthcare facility and academic program policies.
For clinical placements in Pennsylvania, records that are commonly required for compliance include:
Screening
Negative drug test
Clear Tuberculosis (TB) test
Immunization records
Hepatitis B
Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap)
Varicella (Chicken Pox)
Influenza (Flu Shot)
COVID-19 (program dependent)
Training documentation
Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA)
Emergency Medical Response (EMR)
Pennsylvania clinical placements commonly require several clearances: child abuse history, a Pennsylvania State Police criminal history check, an FBI fingerprint-based criminal background check, and a sexual misconduct disclosure.
Act 33 requires an inspection of the Pennsylvania ChildLine and Abuse Registry to determine if an applicant has been involved in a report of child abuse.
Act 34 mandates a repository search of criminal history records maintained by the state. This system often returns results instantly, though some flags require a manual compliance review.
Act 73 involves fingerprint-based background checks to locate criminal history from jurisdictions outside of Pennsylvania using the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) database.
Act 168 necessitates that any employee (in this case, students are counted as such) with direct contact with children reveal past involvement with sexual misconduct violations.
Students can sometimes transfer compliance documents between facilities, but not always. Some health records, certifications, and screening documents may be reusable, but clinical placement partners often maintain their own onboarding standards and expiration requirements.
Students should begin the clinical compliance process as early as possible. Documentation reviews can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to complete, so starting early provides necessary time to schedule appointments and address any issues that could delay clinical participation.
In Pennsylvania, the validity period for student background checks can vary. Many healthcare facilities and academic program policies mandate yearly renewals, but not every institution is the same. Some facilities accept screenings completed within the previous year, while others require more up-to-date documentation.
